FBI widens probe of debit card theft

I noticed on SANS NewsBites this story about the FBI expanding its investigation of a debit card fraud case. The full story is on CNet News.com and apparently involves retailers such as Wal-Mart and Officemax and the source is apparently a data breach. Here’s an excerpt.

The FBI has expanded its investigation into a debit card fraud that has mostly affected 200,000 consumers in the Western United States, saying that the case might be linked to other debit card thefts around the country. The FBI's investigation…has moved from the Sacramento office to Charlotte, North Carolina, after the agency learned that there may be a connection between the California case and a case in North Carolina. Beginning in late 2005, banks and credit unions in California started issuing new debit cards following fraudulent transactions conducted at overseas ATMs.
