Non-profit ITRC Has Its Logo Stolen?
A website called ID-Theft-Recovery.com appears to have taken their logo from the ID Theft Resource Center (for whom I am a volunteer victim advocate). The ITRC has been around since 1998 and is the leading source of victim advocacy and ID theft information. Proof: according to Google there are 500 other web sites that link to idtheftcenter.org. And Google reports 85,000 web pages refer to the phrase “identity theft resource center.” ID-theft-recovery.com, on the other hand, just registered their domain name this past October.
I reported this to Linda and Jay Foley, the co-executive directors of the ITRC. They are good, dedicated people who have worked their tails off for years to help victims. They trained me two years ago and I consider them my mentors. So I don’t like seeing this, even though it may seem innocuous.
Here’s the logo from ID-Theft-Recovery (which I copied off their home page):

And here is the ITRC logo:

It seems likely it was cut from the ITRC site. For example, the lower part of the red circle has little white specs on it, which match up with where the top of the words are in the ITRC’s original red circle. And the location of the words “identity theft” in the red circle are identical to that of the ITRC. That’s just too much of a coincidence for me. The contact email for ID-Theft-Recovery.com, based on their domain name registration is new4az@hotmail.com.
